Hertfordshire is a vibrant part of the UK economy, with space technology, pharmaceuticals, high value engineering, financial services, telecoms, media and creative industries all within its boundaries. We’re raising our game in response to the current financial situation Councils face. With 8,000 staff and over £800m budgets, we’re a big part of the local economy and we are seeking a strategic leader capable of managing a significant and diverse set of property assets.

This role is pivotal to the success of our strategic plans. Accountability will encompass a portfolio of 1,500 properties and an asset base of £344m; it also includes a rural estate of 10,000 acres, reflecting the diversity of the county. We’ve also recently been accepted on to the Government One Public Estate programme. This funding will support local partnerships to work more collaboratively on land and property initiatives, generating new jobs and homes; you and the County Council will be positioned to play a leading role here.

You’ll have a team of approximately 60 property professionals to lead with a budgetary responsibility of £30m. In reference to style, you’re likely to be the kind of person who will encourage your team to develop and to take responsibility; a consultative leader who is keen to develop others through delegation. You build relationships and these interpersonal skills will be evident to all you engage with not just your staff but elected members, and partners too.

This opportunity has come about because a well-respected and valued member of staff is retiring and so you have big boots to fill! However, we want you to bring your own energy to this position, an infectious approach that will rub off on others. We hope we have given you enough food for thought and that you’ll want to read more.
