Voluntary Board Members

There has never been a better time to join the Board of Tyne Housing Group. In the last year we have undertaken a significant business infrastructure review. We have considered our role in the market, our financial viability and our future plans for growth. We concluded that we are best served by retaining our full independence and unique offer to vulnerable, isolated and homeless people in the Tyneside area.

Now that Government have issued a Strategy to address rough sleeping, and a Social Housing Green paper that addresses other housing market issues we feel well placed to play an increasingly important role in the region.

Tyne Housing Group is a specialist supported housing provider operating across the five Local Authorities in Tyneside; Newcastle; Gateshead; South and North Tyneside and Northumberland. It also has a charitable subsidiary, Ouseburn Farm, which comprises an urban farm and education centre; a workshop; and a retail unit selling pre-loved furniture.  We offer supported housing, long term housing, therapeutic occupation, life skills training and access to health care. We are a registered housing provider with Homes England.

The parent body is unincorporated but the Charitable subsidiary is a registered company and a registered charity. Services delivered by the Association include bed spaces for approximately 400 people with housing and support needs, a crisis direct access hostel, a medical centre, 100 long-term secure tenancy units, and a forensic mental health hostel. The subsidiary provides a visitor attraction at the farm plus education and training for vulnerable adults.

We also act as a managing agent providing housing management and maintenance services, support and care and facilities management to a number of agencies.

The organisation has a healthy financial position with assets and reserves. We believe that by focussing on core services, improving the efficiency of the organisation and becoming a key partner to key funding stakeholders, that it will have a viable future. The Board also recognise that this viable future will require some level of corporate improvement to achieve.

We are looking to recruit up to four new Board members. We are interested in candidates who have skills and experience in the following fields:

  • Social housing provision and management
  • Development, build or acquisition of assets
  • Homelessness and social care
  • Working with people with addictions
  • Mental health services

These are unpaid positions but we pay all reasonable expenses as well as invest in our members’ development. Board meetings are held bi-monthly and generally late afternoon/early evening. There may be other meetings of sub-committees; task and finish groups and away days.

Additionally, our chair will be retiring later this year and we will be seeking to recruit his replacement from incumbent board members.

Applications are particularly welcome from BME, people with disabilities and those who may have experienced homelessness.

For an informal discussion please contact our Company Secretary, Marie Graham on 0191 265 8621 or email at marie.graham@tynegroup.org.uk . More information can be gained by visiting our website at www.tynehousing.org.uk

To apply please send an up to date CV (maximum three pages) and a covering letter outlining why you would seek to be a Board member of Tyne Housing (maximum three pages) to Marie Graham at the address above by Friday 22nd February.
