P/T Community Engagement Officer

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (the Council) £1,14m funding from its Townscape Heritage initiative to deliver a comprehensive heritage-led building improvement programme across the Abbey and Barking Town Centre Conservation Area.

Following a successful Round 2 funding bid, the Council has commissioned Be First to appoint a motivated and highly skilled individual for the role of Community Engagement Officer to coordinate and oversee delivery of the activities aspects of the project. The main areas of responsibility are volunteer recruitment and management, coordination of student placements and leading on the production of interpretation and events.

This is an ambitious project for an ambitious East London borough, which focuses on delivering shopfront and external enhancements to over 20 high street buildings in Barking. The project will also develop planning policy and conservation initiatives that support and sustain the improvements made, and delivering a comprehensive outreach and activity programme which increases engagement and awareness of local heritage amongst children, residents and business owners.

This role requires experience of community engagement, volunteer management and of delivering heritage-related events and activities. An understanding of conservation issues, budget management and an ability to work in partnership with a wide range of town centre stakeholders and community groups to deliver funding outcomes is required. Previous experience of successful Heritage Lottery Fund projects is welcomed.
