Homelessness & Advice Officer
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Housing Division’s Housing Management team. This is a key role in the team; the successful candidate will be required to undertake the Council’s policies and procedures for homelessness and work to Government legislation and guidance. This will include offering a high standard of customer service and choice to homelessness applicants as well as pro-actively working in partnership with other agencies to provide support and prevent homelessness where possible.
You will interview homeless applicants, undertake investigations, keeping accurate notes on applicant’s circumstances and develop personal housing plans. You will make decisions on homeless cases in accordance with Government legislation, communicating sensitively and in a way that customers understand. You will secure temporary accommodation for applicants as required by homelessness legislation and provide close oversight of occupants in the Council’s temporary accommodation.
You will require a detailed knowledge and experience of implementing homelessness legislation including the Homelessness Reduction Act and be up to date with current national housing policy issues and good practice. You will have experience of assessing customer’s circumstances including interviewing and negotiating. You will also have excellent customer service and communication skills and experience of working in front line customer service.
Working as part of a small team, you will be able to work under pressure and be able to plan and manage your workload to meet deadlines. You will have a positive and approachable manner and the ability to work flexibly. A positive and pro-active approach to dealing with challenging issues is essential.
This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and, as such, appointment will be conditional upon receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of criminal records via the Disclosure and Barring Service, before the appointment is confirmed. This will include details of cautions, reprimands or final warnings, as well as convictions. A Standard Disclosure will be required.
