About the role

The Barnet Group has blazed a trail in growth and innovation in the housing sector and beyond, and is ambitious for more. To do this we need to find new and robust approaches to meet the challenges we face across our diverse organisation which delivers a range of services including social housing, development, care and support, and private sector rent and lettings. Our aim is to recruit and develop talented people who will help us to think differently and work in new and innovative ways to deliver great services to our customers and make a difference in our communities.

To support our progressive and growing organisation we are looking for an experienced Data Protection and Compliance Officer who can work flexibly and innovatively to support the business and play a key role in its future success.

We are looking for an individual who is self-motivated, organised, proactive, and innovative. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring we protect our data in the best way possible, and will champion the value of data in the future success of our organisation. You will also play a lead role in key regulatory and statutory compliance activities for our new Registered Provider, support growth and improvement through strategic planning and organisational learning, and support the business in its policy management.

You will have a high degree of independence and must be able to prioritise your own workload, while working with different stakeholders to advise and support them with their needs. You will benefit from experience of working with internal and external stakeholders to address problems through policy, process, or behavioural change and a varied cultural landscape.

About you

We are looking for individuals with the right attitude, passion, and commitment who will help us to achieve our vision of our customers being our biggest advocates.

You will preferably hold a Data Protection Practitioner Qualification, or be willing to obtain it.

What you'll need to be successful:

  • Be a collaborative, passionate individual, demonstrating excellent communication skills to a variety of audiences;
  • An understanding of data protection legislation from the rules through to the practical implementation of them;
  • An understanding of the regulation of social housing providers
  • Be comfortable using technology;
  • Project management skills.
  • And to really stand out from the crowd:
  • Have successfully performed a similar role in another organisation;
  • Have a good understanding of the business context relative to The Barnet Group (in particular: social housing, homelessness, and adult social care)
  • Be self-motivated, with the ability to work in a diverse and fast-paced environment;
  • Be curious and seek to learn and improve.

Our values

At The Barnet Group we don't just focus on what we do, but also how we do it. Everyone shares our values of showing respect, finding solutions, and making a difference. We aim to working collaboratively, build trusting relationships, innovate, and be creative in all that we do.

What we offer

We believe strongly in achieving a good work/life balance, and we work flexibly; depending on your role, this may include hot-desking, remote working, working from community hubs, and occasional working from home. Our approach to flexible working includes flexible time, and many roles allow for different work patterns to support caring and other responsibilities.

We want you to love working at The Barnet Group. Some of the benefits you can expect when you join us include a strong flexible working culture, 25 days' annual leave entitlement plus 2 extra days after 5 years of service, an additional 5% or 10% (depending on job level) of your salary to allocate flexibly to the benefits of your choice, hosted by AON (including pension scheme, Flex Bank with access to discounted vouchers from a range of high street shops, gift cards, and experiences, dental insurance, medical cash plan, and dining cards), access to CSSC Sports and Leisure membership, and an Employee Assistance Programme.

The Barnet Group is committed to diversity, equality, and safeguarding. We want to make our recruitment practices barrier-free and as inclusive as possible for everyone. This includes making adjustments for people who have a disability or long-term health condition. If you would like us to do anything differently during the recruitment process, or provide any information in an alternative format, please contact us.

In July 2019 we will relocate to a purpose-built, modern office in the south-west of the borough along with our colleagues at Barnet Council. Our new office is in the heart of the thriving growth and development area at Colindale, with well-connected public transport links including the Northern Line at the nearby Colindale tube station. A range of shops, restaurants, and other facilities including the RAF Museum will be on our doorstep in this green and leafy corner of North London.

Internal closing date: Friday 7th June 2019

Interview date: Thursday 20th June 2019

Company

The Barnet Group is a local authority trading company created in February 2012. We are owned by Barnet Council.

We employ approximately 1,000 members of staff in a wide range of roles; from care workers to plumbers and carpenters. We also have many office-based roles for our ever-growing organisation. We are a London Living Wage employer, and pride ourselves on our equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as the opportunities we provide for staff growth and development.

We are the parent company to:

  • Barnet Homes – this manages the borough’s 15,000 council homes on behalf of Barnet Council. It also works to prevent homelessness and allocates homes to social housing applicants
  • Opendoor Homes – a subsidiary of Barnet Homes which gained Registered Provider status from the Homes and Communities Agency in 2016. Opendoor is developing an initial 320 new homes in the borough, and has ambitions to build many more. It is also purchasing homes on the open market for affordable rent.
  • Bumblebee – an online estate agent providing quality bespoke property services to landlords and tenants, throughout Barnet and the surrounding areas.
  • TBG Flex – a company for the recruitment and employment of new staff.
  • Your Choice Barnet – an adult social care company that provides day services, respite centres, extra care schemes and care homes to adults with learning and physical disabilities, older adults and adults with additional care needs.

Our mission is to make a real difference to every customer.

We also offer services to the wider community. These include a let2barnet lettings service for private landlords, and BOOST, an employment and training support service.
