Delivering support with a difference.  That’s when it hits home.

At Home Group it’s critical we continue to deliver services for our customers during the COVID-19 outbreak, and our awesome colleagues are at the very heart of making that happen.  We're doing things a little differently at the moment, so to keep you and our customers safe, we’ll engage with you digitally.

Do you have a caring nature, great listening skills and a genuine passion for helping others?  Then join us as a Support Worker (known internally by us as Assistant PBS Support Worker) and work alongside our brilliant team who support our customers to live a fulfilling life in their own home within the local community.  Not only will you support our customer to make positive lasting changes to his life, you’ll also be building the foundations for your own future too as there are lots of learning opportunities and progression routes available to support you to develop in your career and be your very best.

Our team support our customers who have complex support needs, including learning disabilities, mental health issues, autism and communication differences, alongside ongoing physical health conditions.

The young man you will be supporting (let’s call him “C”), is 18, full of fun, with an energetic lively personality. He loves the outdoors, taking part in activities like walking, cycling, gardening and even zip wiring!  C also loves animals especially visiting farms and sea life centres to meet them. His other interests include listening to music, musical instruments and dancing, he loves a good dance when no one is watching (don’t we all!) as well as having a good laugh and mess about; so if you love outdoor activities too, have an eclectic taste in music, and enjoy a good bit of Slapstick comedy, you’re perfect for our role!  What C really needs, for you to take the time to get to know him, you’re caring, understanding, positive, reassuring and encouraging.  If you also enjoy cars, trains, watching films and YouTube then you will get on perfectly!

You’ll be working closely with our experienced team, helping C to participate in his favourite things as well as trying new things through positive risk taking. You’ll assist our Support Workers in providing support that is person-centred, understands C’s past life experiences and builds on his strengths.  You’ll help C to enjoy the best quality of life through consistent support when he is finding things difficult as well as helping C participate in daily living activities to increase independence. If required (and only as a last resort), you may have to use physical intervention to keep C and others safe. We’ll make sure you have the training and support you need to do this safely.

About our team

Supported by our brilliant Team Leaders and Support Workers, you’ll work alongside Deb our Registered Manager who has worked for Home Group for 5 years.  Deb has loads of experience in working with customers with both mental health and learning disabilities and has a clinical background in nursing. Deb was also an accredited psychotherapist in a previous life before joining Home Group and is perfectly placed to help you settle into your new role! Outside of work you’ll find her cheering on her local football team, spending quality time with her family and loves cooking for friends.

Where you’ll work

You’ll work primarily with C in his own home in Swindon, as well as supporting him in the community. You can use public transport to support him and we’ll pay your expenses to cover this! C is currently living in Bolton, and we really need your support to help him make the transition to his permanent new home in Swindon. We know this will be an unsettling time for him and he may communicate his distress through an increase in his behaviour. We’re planning to get to know him in his current placement in Bolton in the 6 weeks leading up to his move. You’re an important part in this transition, and you’ll spend some time with C in Bolton and this will include overnight stays. Of course, we’ll cover your accommodation, travel costs (however you would like to travel, car, train or bus) and expenses!

Working hours

C needs support 24/7 to meet his needs, so there will be a variety of working patterns available ideally, you’ll take your turn with your team working on a rota which could include working days, evenings, weekends, bank holidays and waking nights. You may also be required to do sleep ins or be on call where we apply an enhancement. If you are not able to do all shift times, we still want to hear from you, we are building a brilliant team from scratch and we want to be flexible with our approach. As we’re asking you to be flexible for our customer, we’ll also give you the time back that you need to spend time doing the things that matter to you!

About you

You’re passionate and motivated to support C with any aspect of his day to day living which may include providing personal care such as getting dressed.  You’ll have experience of working with complex customers, working to and keeping up-to-date support plans and have a good understanding of the role.  With some understanding of safety and risk management, what’s really important to us is your positive, can do attitude, enthusiasm and brilliant communication and listening skills.  Our experienced team will support you to learn the rest!

When you join, you’ll need to have a valid Enhanced Check under the Disclosure and Barring Service. The great news is that we will pay for that to be done if you don’t have a transferrable one.

How we’ll support you

Don’t worry, we won’t drop you in the deep end, we’ll nurture your talent, help you understand how things work here and you’ll have a fantastic induction with ongoing learning and support! You’ll be trained to support our customer’s mental and physical wellbeing and to take positive risks to enable his successful journey to having his own home and being part of his community.

We want you to get the right balance and to be and feel always at your best to continue to deliver brilliant outcomes for our customer.  So your wellbeing and taking time back when you need it too is our top priority!
