What you’ll be doing

Key accountabilities:

Lead on the development and effective delivery of the Nationwide Foundation’s Transforming the Private Rented Sector programme.

Grant management (30%)

  • Lead and co-ordinate delivery of the Transforming the Private Rented Sector (TPRS) funding programme to identify suitable recipients of funding and assess applications for funding.
  • Supporting grant-holders and manage grants in accordance with good grant-making practice.
  • Support delivery partners to develop associated monitoring and evaluation frameworks and systems
  • Deliver the highest level of good grant-making practices, value for money and a portfolio of grants that meets the Foundation’s risk appetite.

Programme management (70%)

  • Develop the programme’s theory of change and ensure robust monitoring and evaluation of the TPRS programme.
  • Identify and develop strategic relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders including voluntary and statutory bodies, think tanks, academic institutions, and service delivery organisations. Identifying and commissioning activities, research and partnerships which will deliver on the TPRS priorities
  • Develop and maintain expertise in the private rented sector to ensure external credibility and utilise this expertise to inform the Foundation’s direction and messages.
  • Act as a source of private renting policy expertise for colleagues across the organisation, proactively briefing on key policy developments.
  • In consultation with the Foundation’s Communications, Policy and Public Affairs team, influence policy and practice by sharing learning from the grant portfolio and developing the influencing plan for the TPRS programme.
  • Lead horizon scanning to identify proactive and reactive influencing opportunities, and deliver this activity, in partnership with internal and external colleagues.
  • Working closely with the Foundation’s Communications, Policy and Public Affairs team, be accountable for delivering the influencing plan and associated activities to influence policy and practice in relation to the TPRS programme. This will include:
  • Building and maintaining relationships with Nationwide contacts and external stakeholders (including government, specialists in programme area, academics, influencers, opinion formers).
  • Championing key messages to stakeholders, via suitable channels including social media, press, policy positions and direct communications to achieve the strategic outcome for the allocated programme area.
  • Arrange and host events / meetings / roundtables to convene key stakeholders to further the success of the strategic outcome for the allocated programme area at events.
  • Establishing coalitions, where appropriate.
  • With the support of the Foundation’s Communications, Policy and Public Affairs team, lead on responding to policy proposals, government consultations, drafting speaker notes and other material.

About you

The Nationwide Foundation is seeking an outstanding individual who will lead and develop its well established and successful Transforming the Private Rented Sector programme through its next phase. You will play a fundamental role in helping the Nationwide Foundation achieve its strategic ambitions by leading on the development and effective delivery of the programme so that it delivers its outcomes.  

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • A good understanding of UK housing issues, and, in particular, the issues affecting vulnerable tenants in the private rented sector
  • Significant experience of policy advocacy, campaigning and influencing techniques
  • Plenty of initiative, creativity and an eagerness to put ideas forward
  • A talent for spotting opportunities and the flair to make them come alive
  • A team player who is happy to work independently
  • An analytical thinker with experience of assessing, monitoring and evaluating work including an understanding of social outcomes.
  • Excellent relationship management skills and personal credibility to influence stakeholders across a variety of sectors, at many levels, to achieve an intended outcome
  • Excellent report writing, presentation and communication skills
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice and passion for the Nationwide Foundation’s work and vision

Ideally you’ll also have:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the charitable sector including good grant-making practice,
  • An understanding of theory of change
