The Trussell Trust is an amazing place to work – but we wish it didn’t have to exist, because we don’t believe that a charity like ours should be needed at all.

Unfortunately, for now the need is undeniable. We support more than 1,200 food bank centres in the UK, many of which are based in and run by local churches. With around 28,000 volunteers across the country, our small central team serves the operational needs of this network. As you would expect, COVID-19 has had a huge impact on need. The number of food bank parcels provided to people in crisis increased by 89% in April 2020 compared to the same period last year, and the need for services specifically for children more than doubled. And we promise that we will be there as long as we can help. However, public and partner support has also increased exponentially during the past year, so that we have been able both to meet the rise in need and continue to campaign for an end to the structural issues which lock people into destitution. Through our new Together for Change strategy, we’re investing in compelling advocacy, communications and engagement – and most of all, in talented, passionate people – to help end the need for food banks.

Working closely with the Director of Participation, in this role you’ll lead and create transformational change across the Trust. Exemplifying a collaborative approach to our key values of compassion, justice, community and dignity, you will understand the importance of developing and nurturing a community of participants with diverse lived experience of food bank use and financial hardship. You’ll engage and support staff, volunteer colleagues and our network of over 1,200 foodbanks as we embed and extend our participation strategy. Candidates are likely to bring extensive experience of these key values within programme delivery and will have practical knowledge of leading systemic and cultural change to place lived experience at the heart of organisational change. Able to engage and influence at all levels, you’ll be a skilled change manager and persuasive communicator who can instinctively lead without authority.

As part of our commitment to diversity and equality of opportunity we are actively encouraging applications from under-represented groups such as returning parents or carers who are re-entering work after a career break, people who are LGBT+, from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, who have a faith other than Christianity or none, with a disability, impairment, learning difference or long-term condition, with caring responsibilities, from different nations and regions and those with a lived experience of poverty as well as any other under-represented group in our workforce. We are committed to ensuring the safety and protection of our employees from all forms of harm.
