Strategic Director: Services

This role will bring distinct strategic leadership and focus to many of our highest profile public facing services.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Housing and specifically the strategic leadership of HRA matters
  • Community Safety and associated neighbourhood work
  • Front line service delivery of placed based services

This is a highly visible role with a strong emphasis on collaborative working. Successful engagement with partners, residents and other stakeholders will be vital to success.

With a Council commitment to build 1,000 new homes by 2030, the housing element of your portfolio will be a key area of focus. Priorities will include managing the commercial and social impact of the cost-of-living crisis to maintain essential housing revenue, while recognising the economic pressures that our residents are facing. And with environmental sustainability being central to all of the Council’s work, you will also have strategic oversight of the complex investment and delivery programme for the retrofitting of council properties.

Other key issues include managing the Council’s response to the Environment Act, increasing rates of recycling and pursuing the Council’s key strategic objective of tackling the climate emergency and creating a greener district. Ensuring pride in place is of critical importance and being able to manage complex front line delivery contracts in street scene is a high-profile area of focus.

It’s a role that demands a highly developed and versatile skill set. We think it likely that you will already have direct experience of leading on strategic housing issues, but that you also offer the breadth of perspective and insight to take on this wider strategic remit.

Commercial awareness will be an important attribute, tempered with an appreciation of the need to protect the most vulnerable in our community. And it’s essential that you can demonstrate the personal presence and professional credibility to quickly win confidence and trust with a range of stakeholders.
