Strategic Director of Housing, Environment and Communities

Salary up to £103,568

If you have a flair for delivering improvement in social housing and want a wide-ranging set of responsibilities in your next role, this is the job for you!  

We are looking for a highly capable and professionally qualified housing expert (to CIH level 5) to lead on our housing strategy and the management of our 2,800 council homes. It’s a time of change in the service, so as well as your comprehensive understanding of the current and emerging legal and regulatory framework for housing, you should also be able to demonstrate how you have led cultural change to place customers firmly at the heart of the service.

Your recent experience could be in a local authority or housing association setting and while the primary focus of the role is the delivery of social housing, you will also lead on other key service areas that include Environmental Health, Community Safety, Waste Services and our response to the Climate Crisis. As the most senior housing professional in the council, you will report directly into (and at times deputise for) the Chief Executive and, as well as leading on your own directorate, you will be a full member of the Corporate Management Team, contributing to the strategic direction of the council overall. 

Uttlesford covers 247 square miles of rural beauty, with historic market towns, small villages and rural settlements, as well as containing Stansted airport, so this is a varied and exciting role.

There will be a two-stage interview process starting in August as follows:-

• Stage 1 virtual technical interviews (to be held mid-August) *
• Stage 2 in-person final Member interview (to be held September)
  *successful candidates from the Stage 1 technical interview will be invited to attend the Stage 2 Member interview
