The Church of England Pensions Board provides retirement services for those who work or minister for the Church. It is the Trustee of three pension schemes, administers pensions for over 41,000 people working for more than 700 employers and is a charity which supports around 2700 retired clergy and their dependants, mainly through affordable rental housing, shared ownership, and supported living schemes. Pensions and charitable funds under investment total in excess of £3.7bn and the Pensions Board actively engages with companies it invests in, in line with its robust, industry-leading ethical investment policies. This is an exciting time to join us, as the Pensions Board continues to deliver a significant programme of transformational change. We continue to see strong investment returns despite volatile markets and we are currently in consultation for how the model of retirement housing might evolve in the coming years to ensure services best meet changing needs and are generationally acceptable.
We are now seeking to appoint two co-opted Members for our Audit & Risk Committee. These are not trustee roles, but this is an important committee with a broad remit across financial reporting, internal control and risk management, compliance, whistleblowing and fraud, systems failure and internal and external audit. As a member of the Committee, you will be central to ongoing strategic risk advice in areas such as our financial reporting, the reshaping of our housing provision and possible governance changes to our pensions schemes.
One of our new Members will bring significant experience from the housing sector, with a strategic understanding of financing and horizon scanning and the second, experience of pensions administration and governance. Candidates must have current or very recent and relevant experience gained at a senior level in a complex organisation. You will have experience of engaging with boards and committees in either an executive or non-executive capacity, and be able to work well in an environment of collaborative decision making.
Previous knowledge of the Church of England is not required as it is through your broader experience, insight, intellectual rigour and judgement that you will bring to the Committee. With a sound grasp of corporate governance, you will be politically astute and capable of independent judgement. You will have the credibility, integrity and expertise necessary to operate as part of a high-profile committee, maintaining the highest standards of conduct and ethics.
The Committee meets three times a year in February, May and October. The appointments are unremunerated, carry a three-year term and are to commence with induction in January 2025.
